Update June 7, 2019: The SCA will not have online tests officially rolled-out and translated into the Indonesian language in time for this class. The written test for this class will be as usual; old fashioned pencil and paper.

Update May 15, 2019: The SCA is changing the way the written portion of the test is administered. However, it is now clear they won’t have the new process implemented in time for my June classes. This Foundation course will introduce the student to the world of a coffee roaster through both lecture and hands-on training. The curriculum is designed to expose the student to the basics of the entire roasting process, including the roast cycle, a roast profile, and especially roast safety (we’ll be playing with fire!).
This course is suitable for anyone, regardless of roasting experience but is best for new roasters or those who have never roasted before. We’ll be spending the time to understand the basic theory of roasting as well as performing roasts on machines.
SCA Sensory and Green Coffee Foundation level courses are recommended (but not mandatory) pre-requisites. Introduction to Coffee is a highly recommended (but not mandatory) pre-requisite module. All of these courses provide context and perspective for the professional coffee roaster.

- Using science to improve the craft
After attending this course, the student will be able to describe the various stages of roasting using common, industry-standard terminology.

- Common terminology
- The roasting process defined and described
- Safety and maintenance
- Practical instruction (hands-on roasting machines!)
- Written and practical exams — students who pass all exams receive a Roaster Foundation certification from SCA
